"Article 19.
Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers."
("The Universal Declaration of Human Rights")
In Italy, there is this issue about freedom of press; according to lots of people, it seems to have been pretty away from the Country in the last years.
I think this is an extremely urgent and relevant theme and I dislike who use it as a chance, a pretense to going against his political enemies. I think is not right to claim and fight for a war in which you're just doing your interests and nothing else. I think freedom of speech to be a real problem for too many Countries: we're in 2009 and still it is not true that all humans are equals and have the same rights.
Speaking about that, I know there are surely more important themes to be worried and to care about, but I really believe freedom to be the heart of everything, in every case, everytime, in press such as in religion, in thoughts such as in written words. I feel emotionally this topic even more because of what I love the most, to write, but, apart from that, I'm not even able to imagine to live in a Country where I couldn't express my ideas and fight for these, in a Country where I couldn't write about what I want, in freedom, without censorship, without being controlled from Government, State and their forces. And we all know quite well how there are lots of people forced right in that situation and when I say that I despite who makes his own interests to the detriment of others I mean exactly this. In other Countries, people are alienated just because they don't want to give in to their right to think and tell, people are even tortured and killed because of this tendency and, sadly, nowadays not to give up and stand up for our freedom (what really makes of us human beings) has become something in which we must have a lot of courage and strength: it is not a natural thing, as it should be, anymore.
But in Italy too there are really sad cases on propose: writer Roberto Saviano cannot think, talk nor write in full honesty about the situation of his own Hometown without being threatened of death by criminal enterprises as Mafia. This is what I want to call a "problem"; not to complain about a politician who expresses his disappointment about what you wrote or about your television show. A "problem" is another thing: ask Cuba, China and so on.
And be thankful that your major (and only one) "problem" is a politician who boycotts your works instead of being just a dead man walking.
